International anglers in action on dry land in Pretoria
A very unique world championship in a subdivision of angling takes place this week in Pretoria as part of the Sports Fishing World Games.
The South African Sport Anglers and Casting Confederation (SASACC) will make an international breakthrough this week when they host the prestigious Sports Fishing World Games in South Africa.
Although it’s a first for South Africa, it will be the fourth time this prestigious international event will be presented under the watchful eye of the International Fishing Federation.
During the Games various world championships in various codes of angling takes place simultaneously within the boundaries of the host country.
According to the organizers this event will, for the South Africa fishing community, be the most important fishing activity in the history of the country.
Fishermen from more than 20 countries will travel to South Africa to participate in the event. All angling codes like Big Game Fishing, Bass Fishing, Coarse Fishing, Carp Fishing, Shore Fishing, Fly Fishing, Light-tackle Sea Boat Fishing and Long-distance Casting will be part of the event.
The official opening of the Games has already taken place in Sandton this past weekend. After that, participants in the different fishing codes left for different parts of South Africa where the various championships will be presented.
One of the interesting destinations is Pretoria, where the Long-distance Casting Championship will take place this week. This championship will be held on a site at the corner of Garsfontein Road (M30) and Bronkhorstspruit Road (R25) from 11-14 February.
Participants in this championship throw their lines as far as possible on dry ground, after which the distances are measured to determine the winner. It’s an event not to be missed for local enthusiasts interested in this unique sport.
The current Long-distance Casting world record is an astonishing 286m.
