Bobbies 3-in1 road race moves to Hatfield
The ninth annual Bobbies 3-in-1 road race will be presented on a new route in the Hatfield area this weekend.
The well-known and popular Bobbies 3-in-1 road race got a new home this year, after previously being hosted for eight years in the north of Pretoria.
For seasoned road athletes, the race has since 2011 been synonymous with the Wonderboom Junction just north of the Magalies mountain near the Wonderboom nature reserve. But the presenters of the race, Pretoria Bobbies Athletics Club, decided to move the event to a new route in the Hatfield area.
Therefore, the 9th annual Bobbies 3-in-1 road running event – which consists of a 21km half marathon, a 10km road race and a 5km fun run – will start and finish at the Hatfield Plaza Shopping Centre in the heart of Hatfield amongst the student and business hub.
The new route of this race will be laid out through the streets of Hatfield with the 10km and 21km route going over Tom Jenkins pass near the Union Buildings. According to the organizers, this is the only road race in which athletes have to cross the Tom Jenkins pass from the south side. They believe the long downhill on the north side of the hill will provide a unique challenge to athletes.
Pretoria Bobbies Athletics Club will host the event in association with Hatfield CID, which has new plans to protect and develop this area. They will also ensure that athletes will have a save and great time during the event.
The Bobbies 3-in-1 road race has become a popular choice for road athletes from all over Gauteng over the past few years. Between 2011 and 2018 the race grew from a small beginning with thousands of new entries per year to more than 5,000 participants last year. However, the organizers believe they will attract more athletes on the new route this year.
Top athletes like Riana Robertson, Anine Kukard, Pieter Beukes, Reinhard Otto and Renier Grobler will participate in the Bobbies 3-in-1 this year. Participants will also meet the legendary disabled athlete Xolani Luvuno on the route.
Due to the fact that the race is being hosted in the heart of Pretoria’s student life environment next to the Tuks campus, the presenters also have a special cash prize of R3000 for the residence/hostel which can attract the most entries for the 5km fun run.
This year the race will also be held in aid of the PinkDrive (www.pinkdrive.co.za), an NGO initiative with the focus on the prevention of breast, prostate and testicular cancer. The well known PinkDrive truck will be at the event to do free breast screenings for all ladies who are interested.
