Victory for Titans at Franchise Academy Week

The Titans Academy team was crowned champions at the National Academy Week, which was presented last week in Oudtshoorn in the Klein Karoo.

The first silverware of the current 2018/2019 season is in the showcase for the Titans after their Academy team was crowned champions last week at the National Academy Week in Oudtshoorn.

The young team from Pretoria won this title with five bonus points wins from five T20 games at the tournament.

On the final day of this Cricket South Africa tournament the Titans ousted the Highveld Lions in their highly-anticipated derby clash.

The team from north of the Jukskei won by a massive 82 runs against their rivals from Johannesburg as the curtain came down on the competition in Oudtshoorn.

There were also wins for Knights and Dolphins on the final day, but all eyes on day five were on the oval at the Langenhoven Gymnasium where the two teams that had swept all before them met.

The Lions won the toss and bowled first, but their decision did not appear a very good one as the Titans amassed 247 for eight.

Francois van Heerden (73 off 112 balls) were the cream of the crop with his first half century of the week.

Although no one else managed to cross 50, there were useful 30’s by Christopher Britz (32) and Thomas Mashiane (34) as well as 28 from Tsholofelo Phukile, which helped their side to end on 248.

Louis van Schalkwyk ended as the pick of the Highveld Lions bowlers with three for 47.

The Lions needed a good start to have a chance, but Asad Patel (2/17) claimed two of the three early wickets to leave them on 16 for three.

The other strike came from pick-of-the-bowlers Lance Humphrey, who took three for 18, as the opposition never recovered.

Half centuries by Phumzile Majaja (50 off 76 balls) and Cole Abrahams (50 off 53 balls) barely threatened, although they did add some respectability to the scoreline, with the Johannesburg-based side dismissed for 165 in 37.3 overs.

Despite the defeat, the Lions ended second on the standings, with the Knights coming third after thumping the Warriors by 72 runs at the Recreational Ground in Oudtshoorn on day five.

Bradley Porteous struck an unbeaten century for the Dolphins in their 53-run triumph over the Cape Cobras, who ended the week winless.

Two players from the two top teams were rewarded with accolades after the tournament.  Nicolas Smit from the Highveld Lions was named Batsman of the week after his 241 runs (highest score of 109*), while Thomas Mashiane from the Titans was honoured as Bowled of the week and Player of the week. He could boast a best performance of 7/13 with the ball and he took 14 wickets in the tournament.

Three Titans players were selected for the representative South African Academy team at the conclusion of the tournament. They are Christopher Britz, Modiri Litheko and Thomas Mashiane.
