Local figure skaters get their provincial colours
A team of figure skaters from the Gauteng North Figure Skating Association will this week take part in the national championships in Cape Town.
Figure skaters who will be representing Gauteng North at the upcoming National Figure Skating Championship early in April in Cape Town, were officially awarded their colours at recent ceremony held by the Gauteng North Figure Skating Association (GNFSA).
The President of the Tshwane Sport Council, Winston Meyer, and the current South African 400m hurdles Champion and Olympian, Wenda Nel, were the guests of honour at the ceremony.
Both Meyer and Nel gave inspiring words of encouragement on representing Gauteng North and the joys and challenges of competing at the highest level in your sport to the young figure skaters.
Eleven local skaters will represent Gauteng North from the Juvenile up to the Junior Ladies sections at the national championship. Some of these skaters are previous national champions, who have also skated for South Africa at international competitions.
The National Championship takes place at the Ice Station at the Grand West Casino in Goodwood, Cape Town.
Christo Viljoen, chairman of the GNFSA, thanked the team, the committee and coaches for their efforts as Gauteng North figure skating had a very successful year.
Other than competing and winning medals at the provincial, inter provincial and national championships during the past year, the team also managed to perform in front of live audiences across South Africa to sold out shows at the INNIBOS festival as well as a tour in December to Pretoria, Durban and Nelspruit.
Some clubs under the jurisdiction of GNFSA has professional coaches, including former national champions. These coaches have a lot of experience and some of them skated for Disney on Ice for many years.
