Local young women’s golf star helps SA team to win regional championship

A young women's golfer from Pretoria helped the South African women’s team to win the Regional All-Africa Challenge Trophy at the Nkonyeni Lodge and Golf Estate in Swaziland.

Larissa du Preez from the Silver Lakes Country Club in Pretoria was part of the South African women’s team who won the Regional All-Africa Challenge championship in Swaziland last week.

Du Preez and her teammates, Zethu Myeki and Sarah Bouch dovetailed brilliantly over 54 holes to capture South Africa’s seventh successive victory in this tournament with a wire-to-wire performance in Eswatini.

The three players beat teams from Swaziland, Zimbabwe, Namibia, Lesotho, Botswana and Angola to win the title.

New cap Du Preez helped to boost South Africa into a favourable position with earlier rounds of 71 and 73. The Silver Lakes golfer returned a non-counting 79 in the final round.

“I didn’t hit many fairways and that made the approach shots all the more difficult. I four-putted for bogey at five and I was quite upset with my silly mistake. From there on I struggled for pars, but I made good birdies on seven and ten,” said the Ernie Els and Fancourt Foundation member.

According to Du Preez she battled on the greens coming home and that costs her a few shots, especially the doubles at 16 and 17.

“But fortunately, I could play well enough in the early rounds to help my team win and I am grateful to Golf RSA and Womens Golf South Africa (WGSA) for the opportunity to represent South Africa with Sarah and Zethu. This has been a fantastic experience,” Du Preez concluded.

Individually, the three South Africans finished first, second and third in the tournament, with Myeki who finished as individual winner.

“I am very proud of Team South Africa on defending the title. Zethu, Sarah and Larissa performed with pride, both on and off the golf course, and this victory means so much to them,” said WGSA Vice President Sarah Braude after the achievement of the three young players.
