Final tweaks bring safer passage to Tshwane Classic city route
Thousands of cyclists who line up next month for the third edition of the Bestmed Tshwane Classic will now enjoy safer passage through the city centre following some final route tweaks for the event which takes place on Sunday 3 November.
The Bestmed Tshwane Classic city route has undergone some final tweaks following a two-month traffic impact study and a final comprehensive Metro Police dry run, which took place last week.
This has led to the race now detouring the congested bits of the inner-city and taxi hotspots.
“We would like to thank the Tshwane Metro Police Department for their commitment to the event, which is clearly illustrated by their case study and research to determine the best and safest possible routing through the city,” said race organiser Mauritz Meyer.
Following the result of the impact study and after the dry run, the 98km long distance course remains as is until the race reaches the city, but the course in the city now detours the inner-city to route past Loftus Versfeld and Unisa to reach its final destination in Eeufees Road at the Voortrekker Monument at the same spot where the race starts in the morning.
Good news for 50km riders is that Tom Jenkins has been taken out of their course. The 50km takes the same city routing but cuts out Soutpansberg Way and the Union Buildings, going directly from Vermeulen onto Stanza Bopape street where they re-join the 98km route.
“We’ve been inundated by riders who have asked us whether we would consider removing the Tom Jenkins ascent from the short route,” said Meyer.
“This sentiment has also shone through in the entries for the short distance ride. We’re up by quite some margin on the 98km entries, but the uptake on the 50km ride hasn’t been as good. Most of the 50km guys are social riders and the Tom Jenkins climb is a yard too far for many of them.
The third edition of the Bestmed Tshwane Classic takes place on 3 November this year, starting and finishing in Eeufees Road at the historic Voortrekker Monument in the capital city.
Besides the signature 98km race, which takes riders past various major historical landmarks in Tshwane, fun riders are also catered for with the 50km and 20km routes, while kids can have a bash at either 5km or 500m at the Voortrekker Monument.
