Titans still top 4-Day Franchise Series log despite another draw

After a week that produced three draws in the 4-Day Domestic Series, the Titans are still top of the log with the series now fast approaching the halfway mark.

An unbroken 56-run partnership between Grant Thomson and Farhaan Behardien put an end to any nerves and helped the Titans secure a draw on the final day of their 4-Day Domestic Series clash against the Warriors in Port Elizabeth last week.

Thomson led his team by example and his 39 unbeaten runs in the Titans’ second innings followed after his dazzling 101 in the first innings.

With his ton in the first innings, Thomson ensured that the home team’s lead was limited to just 21 runs, after the Warriors declared on 364/9.

Thomson was assisted in that first innings by Wesley Marshall (66), Chris Morris (46) and Farhaan Behardien (39) and the Titans eventually scored 343 all out.

Morris and his fellow bowlers fared much better in the Warriors’ second innings and the men from the Eastern Cape were bowled out for only 260 runs.

Tabraiz Shamsi was outstanding in that second innings of the Warriors with his figures of 5/66 in 21.2 overs. It was his 21st first-class five-wicket display and he was backed up by Neil Brand’s 3/59

That meant that the Titans had to chase a target of 282 runs for the win, but with just the last session left, it would always be a near-daunting task.

However, the Titans slipped to 45 for three early on in their second innings, before the key fourth-wicket stand ensured there was no drama at St George’s Park.

Thomson, who hit his maiden franchise ton in the first innings, hit an assured 39 off 124 balls and Behardien did the same at the other end with a 94-ball 30 to ensure the game finished as a draw.

With the other two games in the series which both also ended a draw last week, the Titans retained their first place on the log.

Mark Boucher’s men will travel to Bloemfontein this week, where they will take on the Knights in their fourth game of the series.
