Titans vs Dolphins 4-Day Domestic Series game called off
The Cocid-19 crisis has now also begun to affect provincial-level cricket, when the Titans' match against the Dolphins at SuperSport Park in Centurion has been called off on Monday morning, after a Dolphins player tested positive.
Cricket South Africa (CSA) confirmed that the 4-Day Domestic Series encounter between the Momentum Multiply Titans and Dolphins has been called off after one player returned a positive Covid-19 test on Sunday afternoon.
The Dolphins’ player experienced symptoms during day 1 of the red-ball fixture at SuperSport Park, Centurion and as per CSA’s Domestic Cricket Covid-19 protocols, a test was carried out.
With player safety and welfare paramount during the Covid-19 hit cricket season, and taking in consideration the upcoming two-match Test Series between South Africa and Sri Lanka, a decision was carried out to call off the match.
CSA will determine whether the match will be rescheduled or if points will be shared between the two sides.
* The match did officially start on Sunday and after the Titans won the toss, captain Theunis de Bruyn chose to bat first
The hosts reached stumps on 269/9, despite their openers both hitting half-centuries in a strong opening stand that was worth 116.
However, Ruan de Swardt (4/41) and Keshav Maharaj (4/48) shared seven wickets to help the visitors claw their way back in the top-of-the-table round five clash.
Aiden Markram was named in the Proteas squad this past week on the back of a superb start to the campaign, which had seen him score three centuries in his previous three innings, and he followed that up by top-scoring with 75 off 150 balls on Sunday.
Dean Elgar, who struggled in the last two games after his strong start to the term, supported his team-mate well with 52 off 83 balls.
However, after both fell, the Titans struggled as they slipped to 206/6 with De Swardt proving the chief tormenter against his former franchise thanks to his career-best figures.
Dayyaan Galiem did launch a later counter-attack with 45 not out off 48 balls to at least help his side cross the 250 mark.
Maharaj’s late double swayed things back in favour of the Dolphins, though, as they ended the day in the ascendency.
However, the Titans’ innings will now only be of academic interest after the game has been called off.
