Local football fans hope for unlikely Pretoria derby in Nedbank Cup final

It is theoretically possible that two local football clubs from Pretoria, one from the Premier Soccer League and one from the National First League, could face each other in the final of the Nedbank Cup.

Local Pretoria football history could possibly be made this year in the Nedbank Cup football league.

For this dream to come true, Pretoria Callies, who surprisingly qualified for the semi-finals of the tournament, will have to win their semi-final match against Chippa United of the Eastern Cape.

In the other leg of the semi’s, Mamelodi Sundowns has a good chance of beating the other finalist in to qualify for the final of the tournament.

This would mean that a National First League club like Pretoria Callies could face their super club Premier Soccer League neighbours and fellow Pretorians, Mamelodi Sundowns in the final of the tournament.

The Nedbank Cup semi-final draw took place last week after the Black Leopards vs Tshakhuma FC quarterfinal clash.

The Premier Soccer League (PSL) and tournament sponsor Nedbank hosted the draw at the Thohoyandou Stadium, confirming three of the teams who will continue their journey in the Nedbank Cup.

Due to the CAF Champions League, the Mamelodi Sundowns vs Orlando Pirates quarterfinal match will only take place on Thursday, 15 April at the Loftus Versfeld Stadium. The fourth team to join the Nedbank Cup semi-finals will thus be confirmed on this day.

While all the football action continues to take place behind closed doors, Nedbank urges all South Africans to play their part by watching and supporting the Nedbank Cup safely from home.

Nedbank is also bringing the stadium atmosphere to South African homes through the Nedbank Cup Fanmode.

This is a digital platform that allows fans to share their experiences and live reactions by singing their team song, celebrating goals, applauding and waving their team flag during Nedbank Cup matches.

Fans can sign up for Fanmode by visiting the Nedbank Cup website.

The semi-final fixtures are as follows:

  • Orlando Pirates or Mamelodi Sundowns vs Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila
  • Pretoria Callies vs Chippa United

The PSL will confirm final dates, kick-off times and venues in due course.
