Tuks qualifies for Varsity Cup semi-final against arch-enemies of Stellenbosch

Tuks qualified for Friday's Varsity Cup semi-final and their opponent is their arch-enemy, the Maties from Stellenbosch.

Nico Luus’ Tuks team will have to drastically improve their level of play and they will have to make far fewer mistakes if they hope to win their semi-final match in the 2021 Varsity Cup against their arch-enemy, Maties, on Friday.

Tuks already qualified for the semi-finals last week with their huge 75-0 victory against the Madibaz. This gave Nico Luus the opportunity to offer all his second-best players a chance to play in their last league match against CUT, which will probably improve the all-over confidence in the group.

The Tuks team’s big weakness during the tournament was their volatility. Sometimes they played really brilliant rugby, which made them look like strong candidates for their fourth title in the tournament. But other times Tuks struggled to build momentum again and unforced errors made them appear very erratic.

However, there is no reason why Tuks could not reach the final of the tournament. Although the Pretoria boys mainly played with the second-best players in their group on Sunday against a desperate team from the Central University of Technology (CUT), they could still have won the match if the last goal kick was successful.

Earlier in the tournament, Tuks also sometimes played brilliant rugby and showed that they can beat any of the other teams if they show up focused for the match.

Luus and his management will probably also hope that referee Aimee Barrett is not involved in any of their play-off matches. For some reason Tuks usually struggles in matches she handles.
