While Tuks’ women’s rugby team dominated women’s rugby in Pretoria and right across the country for a very long time, a new force in women’s club rugby came to the fore from Groenkloof near Loftus Versfeld.

Harlequins Pink, the women’s team of Pretoria’s second oldest club, on Saturday retained their BBRU women’s league championship title after beating the Buffalo’s 30-3 in the 2022 final played at Harlequin Park.

The Buffalo’s team is connected to the Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University in Ga-Rankuwa, just north of Pretoria.

The final produced exciting rugby, but the women of Harlequins, who have completely dominated the league this year, ended up being hopelessly too strong for the Buffalos.

These two teams have dominated the women’s club league under the jurisdiction of the Blue Bulls this year and recently qualified for the finals by taking on the Northam Rhinos and SAPA/Atteridgeville respectively.

The other two teams in the league are Stanza and Mamelodi.

These club teams serve as a source from which the provincial Blue Bulls women’s team is built. The provincial team performed particularly well this year in the national women’s rugby league.

Several stars from the Blue Bulls team were approached again this year by the Springbok women’s team and local players such as Libbie Janse van Rensburg, Nadine Roos and Lerato Makua were outstanding in test rugby for the national team.
