Blue Bulls wins international 10’s tournament at Loftus Versfeld
The Blue Bulls team, which was made up of stars from this past season's Carlton Cup players, won the fun-filled international 10's tournament in Pretoria with their first attempt last weekend.
The Rugby 10’s Championship is a professional rugby 10s competition which offers opportunities to athletes across the world. The competition includes high-profile rugby stars from 25 countries with selected players who have competed at previous 15 a-side Rugby World Cup, Rugby World Cup Sevens, and Olympics.
The first of two legs of this competition in South Africa were presented last weekend at Harlequins Rugby Club and at Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria. The second leg will soon follow in Stellenbosch.
After two days of action in Pretoria it was the Blue Bulls who the Men’s Cup Final, while the Balkans Honey Badgers won the Women’s Cup Final in impressive fashion.
– Cape Town’s Wild Dogs’ Devereaux Ferris took on the blue Bulls team in the Men’s Cup Final. At the conclusion of the 20-minute game, it was the Blue Bulls that walked away with a trophy.
The Bulls team consisted of players drawn from the Bulls’ Carlton Cup teams.
JP Alberts was the first Blue Bulls player to crash over. The forward dotting down with his opposition hanging from his body.
Shortly before the half time break, Bulls were reduced to nine as Gaybrin Smith was shown a yellow card, but the Wild Dogs were unable to take advantage, knocking the ball moments after the South African’s omission from the field and ending the half.
Prodding and probing in the second half, Cape Town struggled to make possession count. As they had done countless times already, they relied on the worldly talents of Rosco Syster’s, who after having mis-controlled a kick through the defensive line, scored in the corner to breathe new hope into his team’s efforts.
To confirm their win, the Blue Bulls would score thanks to a Curtly Brinkhuis interception and a final try through Jack Hart. The local crowd at Loftus Versfeld got to their feet in celebration as their local players lifted silverware.
– Throughout two days’ play, the Balkans Honey Badgers had been unbeaten in Pretoria. And they were not going to slow down in the Cup Final.
They eventually settled with the Serengeti Elephants in the final with a score of 17-7
