The annual Tshwane Classic bicycle race, which was first presented in 2018, is back at the Voortekker Monument, this year on 6 November.

Covid forced the organizers to move the popular race during Covid to Rayton for two years but with the lifting of all the restrictions the good news for riders is that the action the action returns to the Voortrekker Monument this year.

The Tshwane Metro has now properly come on board because they have agreed that the capital does not have to take a backseat to other big cities such as Cape Town, Johannesburg and Durban that host big races.

The routes that the cyclists will take this year have been worked out by David Labuschagne, chairman of North Gauteng cycling, and his team. The routes are safer with less traffic because the city center is eliminated.

Riders will now go through Centurion and then towards Hartbeespoort Dam, after which they will turn back in the direction of the moment.

The last part of the route will be a challenge for the riders. There are two routes of 50km and 100km available for the riders to choose from.

The first group of riders will start at 06:30 in Eeufeesweg in front of the main entrance of the Monument. This race should be finished by 11:00.

For the organizers, the safety of the riders is priority number one. Eighty percent of the roads will be closed for the race. Besides the Metro Traffic, Outsurance Traffic Free Flow and Fidelity ADT and trained Marshalls and motorcyclists will ensure that the routes will be safe.

This year’s medals are beautiful and will definitely be a collector’s item. Special race socks will also be available for purchase at the registration points.

An interesting competition between famous sports stars will be part of the race this year. Victor Matfield, who is an excellent cyclist, and some of his Blue Bulls friends are challenged by a team of players form the Stormers and Lions, led by Breyton Paulse, who is also an excellent rider.

Matfield believes that the local riders will definitely support him. The MMC of the Tshwane Metro, Grandi Theunissen, will lead the Blue Bulls’ social team, while the new City Manager, Johann Mettler who hails from the Western Cape, will lead the Stormers’ social team.

Children are not forgotten. Again, provision was made to keep them busy. On the Monument’s grounds a 1km strip of tarmac have been chosen where the young children’s own race will take place.

This unique children’s race will again be divided into categories. Mothers/grandmothers can let the babies participate in prams. Then there are children who can ride with any article with wheels, provision has also been made for the children in wheelchairs and children in the Primary School.
