Varsity College student surprises in high jump event at USSA championship
A Varsity College Pretoria student recently surprised athletics experts with her performance at the USSA championship, where she won the high jump event.
After athletics enthusiasts had become accustomed to athletes from mainstream universities usually delivering top performances at the Universities Sport South Africa (USSA) athletics championship, this year they were surprised with the result of the women’s high jump item at the event.
In a stunning display of determination and skill, it was Michelle Ngozo, a student from Varsity College Pretoria, who won the high jump with a height of 1.74m.
Although Ngozo already teaches at Sutherland High School in Centurion, she is still a student at Varsity College Pretoria, working on her Postgraduate Certificate in Education.
While the USSA Athletics Championships presented a formidable challenge, Ngozo’s unyielding spirit propelled her forward.
“I admit – I felt nervous entering the competition. Jumping in cold weather has never been my strongest suit, and unfortunately, Bloemfontein didn’t provide the most favourable conditions that day,” said Ngozo.
She remained undeterred, ensuring her body stayed warm and maintaining a positive mindset crucial for her stellar performance.
The USSA Athletics Championships became a pivotal moment for Ngozo’s personal growth.
“Although I wasn’t entirely satisfied with the height I jumped, this competition allowed me to overcome mental barriers. It reminded me that not every day will go exactly as planned, but true growth lies in rising above setbacks,” Ngozo remarked.
Her goal is to compete on the international stage, representing South Africa with pride. Her provisional selection for the prestigious World Universities Games taking place in July this year in the Chinese city of Chengdu, is where the next bar in her athletic journey is set.
Driven by ambition and a relentless spirit, Ngozo is poised to leave an indelible mark, inspiring others to embrace challenges, conquer obstacles, and pursue their dreams with unwavering determination.
