The Pretoria Capitals are finally on the winning track, after a couple of narrow defeats in their first two matches of the current SA20 tournament.

Led by the Proteas player Wayne Parnell, the Pretoria Capitals achieved a very good victory by 17 runs over the Durban’s Super Giants on Thursday evening in Centurion.

The team from Pretoria lost their first two matches in the tournament, both against the Paarl Royals, by 27 runs and 10 runs respectively, after the batsmen in the first and the bowlers in the second match did not perform as desired.

However, on Thursday the team performed much better as a unit and both the batsmen and bowlers did their part to convincingly beat the team from Durban, who until this match were still second on the log and unbeaten after three matches.

For the home team, their two English openers, Will Jacks (101 off 42 balls) and Phil Salt (23 off 13 balls) kicked off the innings in full swing.

They especially kept the scorekeepers busy during the first five overs, when at one stage they batted at more than 14 runs per over. They piled on 74 runs in that first quarter of the innings, which laid a very solid platform for the rest of the batting line-up.

Although Salt lost his wicket soon after this super period, Jacks went on to score his century, which probably ended up being the difference between winning and losing.

The rest of the men all batted positively, but only Colin Ingram (43 off 23 balls) and Rilee Rossouw (11 off 11 balls) could achieve double figures, after especially Reece Topley (3 wickets for 34 runs in 4 overs) and Junior Dala (2 wickets for 32 runs in 4 overs) started turning the screws tighter with their bowling near the end of the innings.

This improved bowling also ensured that the Pretoria Capitals were able to move just past the 200-run mark (204/9), although at one stage it looked as if they might even reach 220 or 230 runs. The wickets fell just too quickly for the home side to run amok in the last few overs, as often happens in this format of the game.

The exact opposite of the Pretoria Capitals’ innings was the hallmark of the visitors’ effort, especially during the first five overs.

Thanks to disciplined bowling by Parnell, Hardus Viljoen and Jack, the men from Durban came out of the blocks quite slowly.

The Durban’s Super Giants’ batsmen also failed to build proper partnerships, which eventually increased the pressure towards the end on two bowlers, Dwaine Pretorius (19 off 10 balls) and Keshav Maharaj (25 off 12) on the pitch.

The overs ran out with their score at 187/7.
