Multisport champion ready to take on the world

A multisport athlete from Centurion has not only collected several titles and medals within the span of seven years since she got involved in this sporting code, but she also shares her knowledge and experience with other athletes in more than one way these days.

With the World Triathlon Multisport Championships taking place in Australia in five months, South Africa’s best multisport athletes are busy with planning and preparation for this event.

Among these athletes is Telani Webber from Centurion, former African age group champion in the sprint triathlon and current South African biathlon age group champion, who recovered from a serious injury just in time to be able to focus fully on this important coming event.

Since this remarkable all-round sportswoman entered the multisport community about seven years ago, she almost immediately started racking up the medals and championship titles.

Webber, who grew up in Pongola in the north of Natal, has been a standout on the sports field since her school days. For example, as a schoolgirl she played netball for the school’s first team since grade 9, while she also excelled as an athlete, swimmer and tennis player.

After school she left for Gauteng to qualify as an accountant, but sport still played a very big role in her life.

She started cycling seriously about 16 years ago and participated in many of the most famous races, such as the 94.7 and others. In 2018, the swimming bug also bit again and before long Webber started participating in this sport at a competitive level.

With cycling and swimming taking up so much of her free time, it was probably not strange that with the encouragement of friends she would eventually end up with the multisport codes later in 2018.

That same year she was already crowned as the triathlon sprint Gauteng champion in her age group, while she also won a silver medal at the SA Master Championship.

In 2019, she took it a step further by winning her age group at the African Championship in Mauritius in the sprint triathlon, while she took part in the grand final at the World Championship in Switzerland.

After the Covid interruption, Webber repeated her previous achievements again in 2021 when she was Gauteng triathlon sprint age group winner, while representing South Africa at the World Triathlon Championship in Montreal, Canada.

Last year she was crowned South African duathlon champion, while she again represented her country at the World Triathlon Aquathlon Championship in Ibiza, Spain.

Now the World Triathlon Multisport Championships await in Australia and Webber can’t wait to test herself again at international level.

In the meantime, sport has also become part of her day job and nowadays Webber is involved as head coach in the Tri-Fit group, where she focuses on coaching triathlon and duathlon athletes, runners, cyclists and swimmers. In addition, she is also an expert and instructor of the well-known Pilates exercise program.

Her knowledge as an athlete and coach is also transferred in other ways. Webber has become known as the author of three different manuals, sharing advice and knowledge on a practical and spiritual level with prospective as well as more advanced athletes.

It is therefore no surprise that in only seven years Telani Webber has made such a big impact on the multi-sport community of South Africa. She is not one to take on challenges in her life half-heartedly. Whether as an athlete, coach or mentor, she does things like a true champion – thoroughly and with dedication.
