– The Lord of the Rings – J.R.R. Tolkien

Possibly the world’s greatest fantasy book ever written. The Lord of the Rings is described as an epic high fantasy trilogy, and came after Tolkien’s children fantasy novel, The Hobbit. This is a must read for anyone who would like to call themselves a reading connoisseur.

– Harry Potter series – J.K. Rowling

This is everyone’s favourite children’s fantasy book – and not only children love reading about Harry Potter and his friends’ magical adventures. These books are part of every child who grew up in the 90s and have to be a part of your book collection.

– Alice in Wonderland – Lewis Carroll

A captivating, classic novel filled with mystical creatures and adventures with Alice. Do not be scared to go into the rabbit hole and read about the wonderful world Alice travels to.

– To Kill a Mockingbird – Harper Lee

If you have not read this classic in school, it is definitely time to read it now. Published in 1960, the book was immediately successful and even won the Pulitzer Prize. This classic of modern American literature has to be on your bookshelf.

– Hamlet – William Shakespeare

You do not have to get in touch with your theatrical side to be a Shakespeare fan. This story of revenge and death is bound to keep you on the edge of your seat. The story runs deep and can be interpreted religiously, philosophically, psychoanalytically and feministically. So more than enough brain food for you there.

– The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy – Douglas Adams

This book is bound to tickle your funny bone and make you question the meaning of life. The book is described as comedy science fiction. Reading The Hitchhiker’s Guide to Galaxy will take you on an adventure of another kind.

– Charlie and the Chocolate Factory – Roald Dahl

Possibly one of British author Roald Dahl’s best works, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory takes you to a world which you might have imagined as a child. Oompa Loompas and a world made of candy – what more do you need? You definitely need to read this beautiful story, even if you are not a child.

– Disgrace – J.M. Coetzee

A Nobel literature prize winner that is very close to home. It is a story that takes place in a post-apartheid South Africa that will make you think about politics but will also probably touch you personally. This is one local classic you need to read.

– Long Walk to Freedom – Nelson Mandela

Tata Madiba’s story written by Nelson Mandela himself. In this book he tells his story – the struggle to break a whole nation free from segregation. A book that will stand proudly on most South African’s bookshelves.
