How to prevent split ends

Follow these tips to prevent your ends from splitting.

Do not wash your hair every day

By washing your hair every second or third day, you give your scalp an opportunity to repair hair with its own natural oils. This will leave you hair smooth and protected for longer.

Gently brush your hair

Try not to brush your hair when it’s wet. Rather use a wide-toothed comb, to make avoid breaking your hair. Use a cushioned paddle brush to brush your hair once it is dry.

Shampoo only your scalp

You only need to wash the scalp and roots of your hair. Shampooing the ends of your hair may dry it out quicker.

Condition hair ends only

Always condition your hair. Start by applying conditioner to the ends of your hair and leave it on for about two minutes to soak in. When rinsing your hair, do not remove all the conditioner from the ends.

Try not to apply conditioner to your scalp, it can result in premature oiliness to you hair.

Towel drying

Wrap a towel around your hair and squeeze in different areas to draw moisture out. Try not to rub your hair too much with a towel.

Blow-drying can be damaging

Blow drying causes a “flash drying” effect that not only removes the surface moisture but also removes water that is bound to the hair.

The effect of flash drying is that the cuticles become dry, rigid and brittle. When the hair flexes, the pressure causes the cuticles to crack, resulting in split ends.

So, when blow-drying your hair, try not to apply direct heat and especially not to your hair ends.

Straightening your hair is just as damaging

Like with blow-drying, applying excessive heat to your hair can break it in the long run. Be sure to stock up on rejuvenating treatment to use every now and again.

Trimming your hair is healthy

Taking proper care of your hair will allow you to stretch trimming appointments to every six to eight weeks. But by trimming your hair every few months also allows you to get rid of unwanted, dry ends.
