EFF promises free water and electricity

"If you are being paid a grant and you live in an RDP house, how are you expected to pay for water and electricity?"

The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) has promised Tshwane residents free water and electricity should it win the Tshwane metro in the upcoming election.

Speaking to residents during a door-to-door campaign this week, EFF provincial treasurer Omphile Maote said the party would do what the ANC had failed to do for the residents.

The campaign started in Soshanguve before spreading to the rest of Tshwane townships.

Maote told Rekord should the party be voted into power, it would implement some of the ANC’s policies that he said the ruling party had failed implement.

“We will show them [ANC] that it is doable. The money is there, and the problem over the years has been that it was used for wrong things,” she said.

Maote said the metro had an indigent programme to assist the poor but did not use it.

“Our poor people continue to suffer at the expense of the fat cats who want to enrich themselves,” she said.

The capital is one of several hotly-contested battlegrounds going into the election.

Maote said the party wanted to address the housing backlog in Tshwane.

“If you are being paid a grant and you live in an RDP house, how are you expected to pay for water and electricity?

“We are going to give those people free water and electricity.”
