Innibos arts festival goes digital and worldwide

The digital event does not, however, replace arts festival planned for December.

The Standard Bank Innibos arts festival will launch a digital arts festival with an exciting programme of music and theatre on 26 June.

The digital event does not, however, replace the arts festival that is planned for December, according to Innibos marketing manager Sandra Jacobs.

It is an added-on experience in the time in which Innibos would have taken place in Mbombela.

“Innibos Digital will have 20 or so productions, some of which include archived recordings from previous festivals as well as new productions recorded exclusively for streaming,” she said.

The drama Leengoed, with Tobie Cronjé, will debut at Innibos Digital – a first virtual debut in the Afrikaans theatre industry.

The fourth annual Innibos National Craft Awards Exhibition, which received more than a thousand entries, is also going ahead.

A virtual exhibition will be held on Friday, 26 June.

It will showcase 60 shortlisted works.

Radio personality Carol Sanderson would introduce each piece to viewers before Mpumalanga culture, sport and recreation MEC Lindiwe Ntshalintshali announces the winners and declares Innibos Digital open.

Jacobs said the on-going Covid-19 pandemic forced artists and festivals alike to be more creative and proactive than before.

“Innibos Digital provides an alternative and extra platform for participating artists. It is also necessary for the festival industry to adapt to the changing art environment and use available technology. We want to make full use of these new opportunities.”

Several new productions will be recorded in cooperation with Coleske Artists and MGG Productions.

Innibos Digital’s programme includes the JacarandaFM and kykNet Birthday concerts which drew thousands of people to the festival last year, as well as the acclaimed Fugard drama People are living there. The full programme will be released soon.

Tickets for the Standard Bank Innibos Arts Festival Digital can be booked from 15 June at Computicket.

The planned date for the full Standard Bank Innibos Arts Festival is 10 to 13 December, depending on government regulations regarding Covid-19.
