Local veteran soccer player extends SuperSport stay

When he came back to South Africa in 2015, Khumalo rejoined SuperSport but then followed his old coach Gavin Hunt to Bidvest Wits.

SuperSport United have handed defender Bongani Khumalo a one-year extension to his contract. The 33-year-old veteran will now spend a third successive season at SuperSport United with his latest deal to run out at the end of June 2021.

The new contract also has a one-year extension option, which could keep him at the club until mid-2022, when he will be 35-years-old. SuperSport is where Khumalo began his top-flight career, winning three successive league titles, after which he went to Tottenham Hotspur in England.

He has also played at Reading, Doncaster Rovers and Colchester United in the English league and PAOK Salonika in Greece.

Khumalo has previously said his ambition was to win a fourth league crown with SuperSport next season. The Pretoria-based defender graduated from the Arcadia Shepherds academy before signing for AmaTuks back in 2005. He represented Bafana Bafana where he played in the 2010 World Cup. He will look to end this current season with a bang after the PSL announced that the season would resume next month.

PSL chairman Dr Irvin Khoza confirmed on Monday, that the decision to complete the 2019-20 season, was voted for ‘unanimously’ by clubs at a board of governors meeting. The Nedbank Cup clashes will see Mamelodi Sundowns take on BidVest Wits, and Baroka FC tackle Bloemfontein Celtic inside the Gauteng bio-bubble at venues still to be determined.

All matches will be played behind closed doors. Gauteng will host the bio-bubble, including the transport of teams to hotels and stadiums.

“This is an exciting development in a difficult time in our country. Clubs which fail to comply with the necessary measures to enter the bio-bubble will not be allowed in and face the possibility of having to forfeit matches,” Khoza said.
