Pedestrian killed in Hammanskraal

The pedestrian was trying to cross the road when a VW Polo Vivo hit and killed him on the R101 (Old Warmbaths road).

A pedestrian was hit and killed by a car in the morning of Saturday, January 7 on the R101 (Old Warmbaths road) in Hammanskraal.

The Temba police report suggests that an unknown man walked into the road without checking for oncoming vehicles.

Warrant Officer Margareth Molane said eyewitnesses revealed that a VW Polo Vivo was travelling from North to South when the unknown man walked onto the road between Harry Gwala and Herman Streets where the incident happened.

“The unknown male got into the road without checking for oncoming vehicles. He was crossing the road from the East side from Renbro complex to the West side,” said Molane.

Molane said the driver tried to swerve the vehicle but hit the unknown male.

“Paramedics were called and he was certified dead at the scene,” she said.

The name and age of the pedestrian are not yet known.

Police have opened a case of culpable homicide and are investigating the case further.

The R101 between Harry Gwala and Herman street was closed temporarily but reopened after it was cleared.
