A traditional leaders’ organisation has encouraged the Mamelodi community to visit local health facilities for health screenings and to learn their HIV status.

The event, called the Cheka Impilo campaign, took place yesterday, Monday September 14, and was organised by the Royal Leaders of South Africa and Ward 38 councillor Saul Ratau. It included stops at several Mamelodi hostels and aimed to promote health and wellness.

The health screening campaign was organised under the theme ‘A Healthy You, A Stronger Community’.

Promoting community wellness

Chief Fanie Mbele, the Gauteng provincial organiser of the Royal Leaders of South Africa, said: “The Cheka Impilo campaign is a national wellness initiative in South Africa that encourages citizens to regularly screen and test for HIV, tuberculosis, sexually transmitted infections, and non-communicable diseases like diabetes and hypertension.”

The ongoing health screening campaign visits different areas in Mamelodi East and Mamelodi West.

Mbele continued, “We want to encourage community members to know their status as soon as possible. We are taking services to the people, specifically based on health awareness.”

Multi-departmental support

The organisations supporting the event were the Department of Home Affairs, Sassa, the Department of Social Development, SAPS, the Road Accident Fund, and the Department of Labour.

Ratau said that the health screening campaign brings health services to residents and teaches the public how to take care of themselves.
