Motorists can prepare to pay for parking in the CBD as of Friday, 15 November.

POLOKWANE – The Polokwane Municipality’s plans to roll out a paid on-street parking system which will see motorists pay up to R8 for an hour.

What you need to know about the paid parking system:

• It will begin in phases, phase one: Grobler and Bodenstein crossing Landdros Maré and Schoeman, Hans van Rensburg crossing Landdros Maré.

• The process will be managed by Park Point on behalf of Polokwane Municipality.

• The parking system is being introduced to give motorists easy access to adequate parking in a clean and safe parking area and was prompted by the lack of parking space and the many incidents of vehicles being broken into.

This system also creates job opportunities for locals with priority for local youths, women and car guards who have been employed and trained to manage the parking bays.

• The trained marshalls will be on hand to guide motorists on the new parking system, making use of the latest technology.

Thipa Selala, the Municipality’s Spokesperson explained that the meters will calculate the time that a vehicle is parked. “Motorists will pay for one hour upfront for the time they will be parked for and a receipt will be issued for every transaction. Motorists will be able to identify the marshalls because of the uniforms and they will have in their possession gadgets for parking,” he said. Failure to pay your parking tariff will result in your vehicle being clamped and towed. Lost tickets will result in a R72 penalty.
