Three men arrested in connection with UL student’s murder

The third suspect, who initially evaded arrest, handed himself over to the police on Monday accompanied by his parents.

POLOKWANE – Three men, between the ages of 23 and 33 years old appeared before the Mankweng Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday on a charge of murder following their arrest in connection with the murder of a University of Limpopo (UL) student.

Police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba said the 24-year-old student was killed in the early hours of Sunday morning (May 12) after walking with a friend from Gate Two on campus.

“The duo were accosted by three unknown male suspects who tried to rob them. They resisted the robbery and one of the suspects took out a sharp object and stabbed the victim on his upper body,” Ledwaba said.

Campus security are said to have witnessed the incident and grabbed two suspects who were later handed to the police but the third suspect managed to flee the scene on foot.

“Following the incident, the victim was rushed to the Mankweng Hospital for medical assistance but succumbed to his injuries upon arrival at the facility,” he said.

Ledwaba added that the third suspect who evaded arrest during the incident handed himself over to the police on Monday (May 13) accompanied by his parents.
