Vacant posts not necessarily without teachers says Lim Edu MEC

There are currently 4 933 vacant posts in Limpopo, the third highest in the country, Minister Angie Motshekga recently mentioned.

POLOKWANE – Last Wednesday, the Education Department announced it would this week advertise 2 550 permanent school management team (promotion) posts to fill temporary vacancies, as was the commitment earlier this year in its departmental budget speech.

The media statement by the department came in response to a DA letter that sought to establish reasons for the large number of teaching vacancies in the province and when these will be filled.

There are currently 4 933 vacant posts in Limpopo, the third highest in the country, Minister Angie Motshekga recently mentioned, saying these statistics were drawn from the Persal system, a personnel salary management information system.

The definition of a vacant post according to Persal standards, however, does not necessarily translate into the positions being unfilled, Education MEC Mavhungu Lerule-Ramakhanya commented.

She said it was important to clarify that when an employment post does not have a permanent incumbent, it is classified by the system as vacant, even if there a temporary appointment was made.

“Temporary posts are coded differently from permanent posts on the system. There is no school where learners are not being taught as a result of posts not being permanently filled. School Governing Bodies supported by our able districts directors and circuit managers ensure that there is a teacher in front of all learners at all material times,” she explained.
