Vhembe police investigate the death of a toddler

Police are conducting an inquest into the death of a 1 year 8-month-old girl who appears to have fallen inside a dustbin full of water.

LIMPOPO – The Malamulele police in the Vhembe District are conducting an inquest regarding the untimely death of a toddler in Xigalo village on the afternoon of Friday, May 24.

Police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba says that the police received a call about a child who had fallen inside a dustbin containing water.

“On arrival, police found the body of a toddler (1 year 8-month-old) lying on the floor inside the house.”

Ledwaba says that initial investigations show that at around 15:00 that afternoon, the deceased’s brother arrived at the family home while the mother was doing chores.

Shortly after, family members noted the toddler’s absence and began to look for her. They found her inside a dustbin that was full of water and pulled her out.

EMS personnel were summoned and declared the toddler dead.

The provincial police commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe implores parents and guardians, “Please be vigilant and alert about your children’s safety at all times.”

Ledwaba says police investigations are continuing.
