IEC targets young voters

Govan Mbeki towns record fairly good turnout.

HIGHVELD – The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) voter registration process went smoothly in the Govan Mbeki municipal area on 9 and 10 November.

Officials said the turnout was fairly good, but they wanted more young people to register for the general elections next year.

Many centres opened at 8am and closed at 5pm.

Only a handful of first time voters turned out at some of the stations.

Ms Phindile Kumalo (19) was among the young people who registered for the first time at the municipal office in Extension 17 in eMbalenhle.

“I want to have a say in the running of the country.”

Various voting stations in Evander, Secunda, Bethal, Leandra and Kinross were quiet on Saturday afternoon.

Leth’ithemba Drop-In Centre in eMzinoni registered 23 new voters and 33 people were checking their voting details by 2pm on Saturday.

The IEC is hoping to register more than two million first time voters before the elections.
