The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) in Mpumalanga thanked all those who responded positively to register at the weekend for next year’s national and provincial elections.
According to the IEC , the registration weekend in Mpumalanga was characterised by smooth operations with the vast majority of stations opening on time and people registering quickly and efficiently.
However, some political parties were not pleased with the registrations in some parts of Sakhile.
According to Mr Bheki Buthelezi, regional organiser of the Pan Africanist Congress, some voting stations opened late.
“At some stations, the IEC staff were seating at the same tables with the party agents, which was not suppose to happen,” Mr Buthelezi said.
The IEC acknowledged that there were minor problems at some stations, but that these isolated incidents were quickly resolved with the support of political parties, community leaders and security services.
Additional platforms of engagement including the website, SMS line, call centre and social media also helped to ensure rapid access to information both for voters and for election officials monitoring the process.

New registration from people who were registering for the first time were 1 758 and people who were reregistering are 549.
The total number of people who registered is 4 827.
The IEC thanked all its stakeholders for their help to ensure a successful registration process including the Department of Home Affairs which opened its offices over the weekend to facilitate the collection of new IDs and the issuing of temporary ID certificates, and the South African Police who provided security over the weekend.
“We are also grateful to political parties and the Party Liaison Committee for their support for the registration weekend as well as community leaders and other key stakeholders,” Mr Sibusiso Nkosi, communications officer of the IEC, said.
The IEC encouraged people who have still not taken the opportunity to register, to do so before next year’s elections.
They can do so by visiting their local municipal offices.
