Gert Sibande District leads with HIV prevalence
Govan Mbeki Municipality’s local Aids council takes action against virus.
HIGHVELD – The Govan Mbeki Municipality’s local Aids council is aiming at reducing the HIV prevalence in the Gert Sibande region.
An outreach programme was held at the Sjongile Ndamase Community Hall at eMbalenhle on 19 November, at the Raymond Mavuso Community Hall at eMzinoni on 20 November and at the Difa Nkosi Community Hall at Lebohang on 21 November.
Health officials and volunteers visited residents and provided them with HIV tests, counselling and other various health issues.
The outreach was a preparation for the Word Aids Day that is going to take place at the Mkhondo Municipality on 1 December.
The theme for the commemoration is ‘Get Wise. Get Tested. Get circumcised’.
Mpumalanga has the second highest HIV prevalence rate after KwaZulu-Natal and the Gert Sibande District is leading all districts in the country with the prevalence.
The local Aids council was launched in September and it involved various government departments, non-governmental organisations, community-based organisations and affected parties in relation to HIV/Aids.
It is aimed at combining resources and efforts in the fight against HIV/Aids.
