Emergency services get assessed
An accident scene was set up for emergency services.
EVANDER – A bus filled with “patients” and an oil tanker were the set up for emergency services on Thursday, 28 November.
It was all from the word go for emergency services when they were put through a mock scene whereby they were assessed on their performances in case of a real life emergency.
Emergency services such as the ambulance departments, fire departments, the police and traffic departments all had eyes on them while being assessed by Caer stakeholders together with Govan Mbeki, Sasol and local hospitals.
Each emergency response had their work cut out for them, such as blocking off the scene, reporting on the scene, making sure both the heavy duty vehicles were properly hosed down before moving patients to a safe area, where they could be treated and transportation to nearby hospitals.
The assessment takes a look at all areas of response, starting from when the call is received.
This is to help recognise which areas need room for improvement.
Although this was a staged assessment, one does not really know what our emergency services have to deal with on a daily bases.
These emergency personnel face many challenges in their work place, but at the end their focus is on the patients and saving as many lives as they can.
Intermediate Paramedic, Mr Rodger Sailesi of Langamed said: “The majority of accident scenes are caused through drivers who drink and drive, just being plain negligent or not abiding to rules of the road and also using cell phones when driving.”
He said: “Motorists are asked to slow down and be observant when they pass an accident scene.”
“Some motorists will be looking at us to try and see what has happened, this sometimes causes a secondary accident or traffic congestion,” Mr Sailesi said.
With the festive season around the corner, motorists are urged to take care on our roads and to abide by the rules and speed limits.
