LEANDRA – Residents do not want the name of their town Eendracht to be changed.
This was raised at a name change consultation meeting which was held at the Eendracht Licensing Office on Tuesday, 26 November.
Residents also said names should not be changed for the sake of changing, but only the apartheid names that are provocative to other racesv could be changed.
They also requested that the government should consider the history of a place before changing the names.
According to the residents some street names have been changed without any consultation and they do not even know the people the streets are named after.
Mr Abel Nkabinde, Local Geographic Name Change Community Consultation committee member, said: “Names can not be changed without consulting residents of that particular area.
“If residents do not want the name of their place to be change, they are welcome to oppose that according to the given procedure.
“There will be a suggestion box at the municipal offices where residents would be given a chance to give their suggestions.
Residents asked to be present when during the opening of the suggestion box.
