The stink is unbearable

KINROSS – Sewage and black worms from toilets cover the yards of residents of Extension 25.

This is caused by VIP toilets that have not been drained since last year.

Residents said they have reported the matter to the local councillor, Mr Dan Nhlapho, and the municipality, but nothing has been done yet.

Ms Marcia Mdluli, a resident, said: “The municipal official came recently, but we were not happy with their visit because of their attitude.

“When they entered our yards they closed their nose , because they could not bear the stink.

“What about us who live in this condition daily?

“They just took photos and promised to return, but they did not.

“The situation is really unbearable, and during the day you could see black worms in your kitchen and the yard.

“I have to clean the kitchen more often with Jeyes Fluid to control the worms.

“We do not even have water here and to get water you have to go to the another extension.

“We paying our services every month, it is not fair.”

Some residents have opened holes in the walls of their homes, so that when the waste flows inside the house, it can flow to the outside.

Mr Gedezi Mngomezulu said: “These holes also serve as ventilations, because the smell is just unbearable, we can not even enjoy our meal.

“The situation has caused conflict between me and my neighbour.

“The waste flowed into his yard recently and he was very cross.

“My wife has been accused of bewitching her step-daughter whereas my daughter has been bitten by the black worms from the toilet.

“She has sores all over her body, it is worse than chicken pocks.”

“My aunt has paid a private company to drain the toilet which cost about R3 000.”

Some residents complained about their RDP houses that are not built properly and have cracks.

Gogo Linah Khumalo could not hold her tears as she was explaining how the situation has affected her family and her health.

“I am sick today because of this situation that gets worse in this rainy season.

“The RDP ouse was not built properly and when it rains, the water mixed with waste comes inside the house.

“The furniture is damaged and the remaining ones must be lifted so that they do not get damaged as well.”

Residents are also concerned about not receiving statements from the municipality and if they want a statement, they have to pay R7.

At the time of going to press the municipality has not yet commented.
