People dump next to road

People are dumping rubbish next to the road.

eMZINONI- The dumping site on the Standerton road next to the eMzinoni Cemetery exemplifies the meaning of the word.

Residents complained that the dumping site is closed and people are dumping rubbish next to the road.

Several scavengers roam the area in search of food or items of value.

The Ridge Times reported about scavengers who made a shelter at the dumping site last year.

Mr Henry Masango, head of marketing and communications for the Govan Mbeki Municipality, was asked for information regarding the current situation at the dumping site.

He said: “The Bethal waste disposal site is open and accessible to any vehicle, despite the waste that is being dumped along the access road.

“During the first week of December, all our disposal sites, including the Bethal site, were completely flooded and not accessible.

“As a result the community had no option but to dump along the access road leading to the site until it dried off.

“As most of the service providers were closed during the festive season, machinery and equipment to clean up the area could only be secured this week.

“By next week all the waste along the road will have been removed and the road towards and inside the site repaired.”
