Pupils receive shoes from municipality

The Govan Mbeki Municipality handed out school shoes to needy pupils from various schools in the area at the Lilian Ngoyi Centre.

SECUNDA – The Govan Mbeki Municipality handed out school shoes to needy pupils from various schools in the area at the Lilian Ngoyi Centre on Friday, 7 February.

This was part of the municipality’s Back to School Campaign that has helped more than 340 pupils since it began in 2011.

Mr Sakhile Mahlangu, MMC for Development and Planning, said the aim of the campaign is to inculcate the culture of learning by ensuring that pupils go back to school in comfort and in looking similar to their peers.

“This is the fourth year that we give shoes to destitute pupils from the non-fee primary schools.

“A pair of shoes is the first step towards rebuilding a new life filled with possibilities.”

Mr Mahlangu said their goal is to give needy pupils full school uniforms and he appealed to business people and stakeholders to lend a helping hand.
