Lekwa confirms Ext 8 pump station is operating below capacity
New pumps are planned as a permanent solution following repeated mechanical failures.
In response to the Standerton Advertiser front-page article published on October 9, “Raw sewage overflow raises concerns”, regarding the sewage overflow in Ext 8 along the R50, Lekwa Local Municipality communication manager Lubabalo Majenge confirmed that the sewer pump station opposite Standerton Correctional Services is currently not operating at full capacity due to repeated mechanical failures.
“The station failed previously as a result of foreign objects entering the system, which damaged the motors,” said Majenge.
He said this is the second breakdown of this nature at the sewer pump station.
Following the recent failure, the municipality conducted an assessment and found that the cost of repairing the submersible pumps is equivalent to the cost of installing new pumps.
“A decision was therefore taken to permanently upgrade the station with new T6 Gorman-Rupp pumps, which will provide a longer lifespan and increased operational efficiency,” said Majenge.

According to Majenge, the procurement process for the new pumps is currently underway.
“The municipality is aware of concerns regarding overflow into stormwater drains and nearby watercourses. Our environmental health unit has been notified, and the area is being monitored,” said Majenge.
He said municipal workers stationed at the pump station have been briefed on health and safety precautions and issued with the necessary PPE.
“We apologise to residents and farmers for the inconvenience, and we thank them for their patience as we work to implement a permanent solution.
“We appeal to the community not to dispose of foreign objects such as rags, plastics and other materials into the sewer system,” said Majenge.
