Bethal bridge a safety hazard

“It is a danger to the community and should be a number one priority to the municipality,” says DA councillor.

BETHAL – Residents think the bridge near the Nestle factory in Malherbe Street is more dangerous to the community after a flood last year.

According to Mr Hannes van Baalen (councillor) the bridge is a safety risk that needs repairing.

“I made an appointment two weeks ago with Mr King Sehlali, to discuss the problem with the bridge, but he said that he would phone me back, ” said Mr van Baalen.

According to Mr van Baalen he has not heard from Mr Sehlali.

The bridge is beginning to collapse, because of all the rain and it appears that the bridge will be inaccessible to motorists soon.

“It is a danger to the community and should be a number one priority to the municipality,” said Mr van Baalen.

According to Mr Henry Masango, Marketing and Communications manager of Govan Mbeki Municipality, a technical assessment by an engineering consultant will be done and a report will give direction on what needs to be done to the bridges.

The assessment will cover both Malherbe bridge and the bridge towards Emzinoni that was also affected.
