Company empowers employees

Sasol equips its people with skills.

SECUNDA – Sasol Mining hosted a formal ceremony at the Sasol Mining Twistdraai Technical Training Centre for an official handing over of toolboxes to seven Sasol Mining employees who successfully completed a plumbing training programme recently.

The Portable Skills Training Programme was initiated last year and forms part of the Sasol Mining Social Labour Plan (SLP) commitment.

Beneficiaries of this programme are Sasol Mining employees nearing retirement and also those who are no longer fit to work in the underground environment.

According to Mr Alex Anderson, group media manager, the purpose of the programme was to equip employees with basic trade skills such as plumbing, bricklaying, welding, vehicle maintenance and agriculture.

“This is to enable them to generate a new means of income to sustain themselves and their families,” said Mr Anderson.

Mr Vusi Nkosi, manager of Sasol Mining Social and Labour Plan, said: “This programme is another example of our commitment to invest in our employees to equip themselves to become self-reliant after returning to their communities.

“The SLP will up-scale and diversify this portable skills development programme in the years to come.”

Sasol Mining invested R17.8 million as part of its Social and Labour Plans (SLP) last year.

“Sasol interacts on an ongoing basis with the communities and our other stakeholders, including landowners, in the areas in which we operate,” said Mr Anderson.

“A number of community infrastructure LED projects are being constructed in various towns of the Dipaleseng and Govan Mbeki municipal areas as part of the Sasol Mining SLP programme.”

The LED projects currently being implemented include a fully equipped and functional fire station in Leandra, the upgrading of a sewer pipeline in eMbalenhle Extension 26 and the paving of roads in Nthoroane Extension near Greylingstad in the Dipaleseng municipal area.

Sasol Mining recently provided two 10 ton suction trucks for the removal of sewage in Charl Cilliers.

In addition Sasol Mining completed the repairs to a five million litre water reservoir which supplies Kinross Extension 25 with water.

“Going forward, the second phase of the Leandra storm water drainage system project will also be implemented in the Govan Mbeki Municipality this year,” said Mr Anderson.
