Community pulls body from Wellas River in eMbalenhle

An inquest docket has been opened.

Police in eMbalenhle are investigating an inquest docket following the discovery of an unknown man’s body in the Wellas River on the night of May 16.

According to eMbalenhle police spokesperson, Sergeant Busi Mthethwa, police were called to the scene by community members after a body was retrieved from the river.

Mthethwa said community members informed police that they had noticed a man in the water and initially believed he was still alive.

They entered the river in an attempt to rescue him, but discovered that the man had already died.

“All relevant role players were summoned to the scene, and the man was declared deceased,” said Mthethwa.

Police subsequently opened an inquest docket to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Responding to allegations circulating on social media claiming that the deceased allegedly committed suicide by jumping from the bridge wall into the Wellas River, Mthethwa said police have not received any information confirming those claims.

“We do not have such information because no one has come forward with it,” said Mthethwa.
