Salga will now take part in law making
Mpumalanga Provincial Legislature has entered into a memorandum of understanding with South African Local Government Association (SALGA) Mpumalanga.
SECUNDA – A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Legislature and the South African Local Government Association (Salga) has been signed on Tuesday, 4 March at the Lillian Ngoyi Centre.
This follows lengthy discussions between the Legislature and Salga Mpumalanga on the involvement of Salga in the work of the Legislature.
This happened on the second day of “Taking the Legislature to the People”.
This MoU will strengthen the participation of Salga Mpumalanga in the business of the Mpumalanga Provincial Legislature and ensure that the interests of local government are clearly articulated within the Provincial Legislature.
The agreement was signed by the Speaker of Mpumalanga Legislature, Mr Sipho William Lubisi, on behalf of the Mpumalanga Provincial Legislature and Mr Mafika Nkosi, councillor, on behalf of Salga Mpumalanga.
Mr Lubisi said: “The agreement will create a uniformed approach in the manner in which Salga will participate in law making, oversight and the public participation process of the legislature.”
This means Salga Mpumalanga can now take part in the legislature committee activities as part of strengthening the oversight function of the Legislature.
Mr Nkosi said the agreement will ensure that the voice of organised local government is heard at provincial level.
“This will allow proper oversight over the municipal Integrated Development Plans.
“The MoU signed today will also strengthen and deepen the principle of participatory democracy.”
