Party welcomes municipality’s effort

Residents finally get attention from municipality.

SECUNDA – The DA welcomes the municipality’s resolution about the Holfontein settlement.

According to Mr Encee van Huyssteen, DA coucillor, Govan Mbeki Municipality is performing a detailed study of the informal settlement as outlined in the National Upgrading Support Programme (NUSP) strategy.

Holfontein is situated next to the N17 highway, between Trichardt and Kinross.

“For years more than 200 dwellings have had no access to electricity or sanitation, no refuse removal and only two water taps to serve their needs,” said Mr Van Huyssteen.

“While the DA wholeheartedly endorses the council resolution, we hope that the ANC-led council is not just doing this as a form of cheap electioneering.

“For years now this desperately impoverished community has been at the receiving end of too many empty promises and only now after more than a decade, does it seem that their patience has been rewarded.

“As welcome as this council resolution is, it needs to be pointed out that Holfontein is not the only struggling community in the Govan Mbeki municipal area and that residents in those areas need to be reassured that their needs will be attended to.

“The DA will continue in our fight to bring about change in the Govan Mbeki municipal area and we will continue to hold this municipality to account as it continues to expand its service delivery network to local communities.”
