Residents unite in fight against crime and drug abuse
Police arrest one Nyaope supplier and two men for theft.
LEBOHANG – Residents and taxi driver handed over a suspected Nyaope supplier to the police on Wednesday, 11 May.
This was after residents had experienced several break-ins and then mobilised themselves and taxi drivers to find suspects.
They said they knew that people causing these crime were Nyaope smokers and they came to an agreement to search for them and their suppliers.
Three men were handed over to the police on Wednesday evening by hundreds of residents who proclaimed that Lebohang is not a place for Nyaope smokers.
Nyaope is a dangerous and highly addictive South African street drug.
It is a fine white powder that is usually combined with marijuana (dagga) and is smoked.
It is not always clear what all the ingredients of Nyaope are because these may vary from place to place.
One thing is clear, Nyaope is made of a lethal combination of substances, which can include heroin, detergent powder, rat poison and crushed anti-retroviral drugs (ARVs).
ARVs are the medication used to treat patients with HIV.
Nyaope is relatively cheap at about R25 for one hit and a person can become highly addicted after using the drug only once.
W/O Khuselwa Matrouse, spokesman for the Leandra Police Station, confirmed that one Nyaope supplier was arrested and two men for theft.
They will appear at the Leandra Magistrate’s Court on Friday, 16 May.
