E.coli found in sewage

LEBOHANG – Residents do not no what to do anymore about the continuing sewage problem in their township.
DA councillors Messrs Johannes Nkabinda and Tim Denny, have reported the sewage problems to the municipality numerous times.
Mr Denny went so far to open a criminal case against the municipal manager and technical manager of the Govan Mbeki Municipality.
This came after he took samples of the water in Lebohang and found E.coli bacteria in the water.
E. coli (Escherichia coli) lives in the digestive tracts of humans and animals.
Some strains of E.coli bacteria can cause severe anaemia or kidney failure, which can lead to death.
Other strains of E.coli can cause urinary tract infections or other infections.
You get an E.coli infection by coming into contact with the faeces or stool of humans or animals.
This can happen when you drink water or eat food that has been contaminated by faeces.
“The sewage pump in Lebohang has been overflowing since November and nothing has been done about it,” said Mr Denny.
After he had opened a case against the two municipal officials he has not heard from the police or the courts.
The toilets at some of the schools are blocked because of the sewage problems and it looks as if there is no second dam in case the sewage at the pump overflows.
According to Mr Denny, cattle and people drink the water from the river where the sewage water flows into.
The river in Lebohang eventually flows into the Vaal River.
The Echo and Ridge Times asked the head of Marketing and Communications of the Govan Mbeki Municipality, Mr Henry Masango, for comment, but he did not reply at the time of going to press.
