Caer and stakeholders equip each other

SECUNDA – The Govan Mbeki Community Awareness and Emergency Response (Caer) held a table top emergency exercise on Thursday, 12 June at the Twistdraai Works Emergency Centre.
It was aimed at testing the readiness of various stakeholders in the disaster management plans in case of any floods that might occur in the Govan Mbeki Municipality.
The theme of this exercise was Operation Water Simulation 2014.
Various stakeholders such as the police, the Department of Fire and Rescue, MediClinic Highveld, the Department of Roads and Storm Water and others were tested on the day.
Ms Nomfundo Mahlangu, disaster management officer for the municipality, said the exercise was a good platform for all stakeholders to come together and to equip one another.
“Collecting our resources and knowledge will ensure that we know who has what in case of an emergency.
“We ask top managers of various stakeholders to support us so that we can be ready.
“Even if we do not have a disaster in our area, the simulation shows what to expect if it happens.”
Ms Ntombufuthi Macheke, convener for Caer, thanked the stakeholders for taking part in the exercise.
“I am grateful that the exercise went well.
“This was a learning curve for all of us and I am looking forward to many more exercises in the future.”
