Polar Bear Express team takes on Africa

They will drive through countries such as Namibia, Zambia and Malawi and then head back to Cape Town.

TRICHARDT – Messrs Pawel Motylski, Daniel Laia, Reuben Walter and Gareth Williams began with their journey through Africa on Saturday, 14 June when they left Trichardt with their 1948 Suzuki Half Loaf vehicle.

They headed for Cape Town where they met with other teams and began the Put Foot Rally on Tuesday, 17 June.

Teams will have to cover a distance of 12 000km through Africa.

They will drive through countries such as Namibia, Zambia and Malawi and then head back to Cape Town.

Altogether 50 teams take part in the rally this year and Messrs Motylski, Laia, Walter and Williams named their team the Polar Bear Express.

The aim of the rally is to create awareness that Africa is accessible with any type of vehicle and the Polar Bear Express team decided on a Suzuki Half Loaf for a vehicle because it is such an old vehicle.

“It is part of the adventure to do the rally with such an old vehicle,” said Mr Motylski.

The team was looking for such an old vehicle to use for the race and found the Suzuki Half Loaf in Boksburg for R20 000.

They then had to do some repair work on the vehicle.

The Put Foot Rally also does charity work as far as the teams travel and collect shoes for less privileged children.

The Polar Bear Express team did some charity work in Trichardt as well.

This team is doing the race in remembrance of Mr Laia’s cousin, Ms Michelle Laia, who passed away.

According to the Polar Bear Express, it is the first time that a team is using a Suzuki Half Loaf vehicle to do this race.

“We are thinking of doing the American rally next year,” said Mr Motylski.
