MEC casts vision for 2014/15 financial year.
Mr Violet Siwela (MEC: Human Settlement) briefs stakeholders about actions she will take in the current financial year.
HIGHVELD – Ms Violet Siwela, MEC of Mpumalanga Department of Human Settlement, wants the department to reduce work for incompetent contractors and to get rid of poorly built RDP houses and other infrastructure services.
She said the department is required to deliver quality services to communities in an integrated and sustainable manner to achieve coordinated development.
“Until recently the department has experienced challenges regarding delivery of quality houses and other infrastructure.
“Contractors who are not performing will be looked at, talked to objectively and their work will be reduced.
”As a central and key driver of development, the department will have to, among others, focus on rural development through the support of cooperatives.
“The department has a role to uplift cooperatives by developing plans and innovations to assist them to get into the mainstream economy”.
The department’s management, stakeholders such as housing associations, sector departments and field specialists, are concretising plans for the 2014/15 financial year and developing plans for the next five years.
The department has planned to progressively establish 10 new integrated human settlements, support municipalities with bulk water and sanitation infrastructure and deliver 7 755 housing opportunities with R1 380 billion for the 2014/15 financial year.
