Teacher laid to rest
Mr Themba Vilakazi, teacher from a local primary school, died when the synagogue in Nigeria collapsed.
The Sakhile community celebrated the life of Mr Themba Vilakazi, who died in the synagogue that collapsed in Nigeria.
A memorial service was held in his honour at Sakhile Hall on 20 November.
The hall was filled to capacity with fellow teachers, pupils, community members, friends, and family.
All the speakers had nothing but good things to say about him.
Colleagues described him as an organised, selfless and humble man, who led by example.
They also described him as a person who loved to laugh, passionate about education and music.
Phumzile Motloung, a pupil at Madi Primary School, said he motivated them to strive for success.
“He always encouraged us to focus on our studies, even though we go through some difficulties in our lives,” she said. Mr Vilakazi had been working as a teacher at Madi Primary School for 32 years. He is survived by his wife Mavis, his sons Sipho and Bongani, his daughter Sibongile, his sister and his grandson.
Mr Vilakazi was laid to rest in Standerton on 22 November.
