Roodebank children cannot attend school

Buses and text books are not available.

eMBALENHLE – Pupils from the Roodebank Combined School have not been attending school since the reopening of the second term.

Buses are apparently not available to transport them to school.

“We should in any case get other buses, because the buses that used to take us to school do not have brakes and we nearly had an accident one day,” said a pupil.

Parents also said the buses are not roadworthy, but said there is nothing they can do because the government decides which buses they must use.

Mr Pule Lukhele, principal, said pupils report all bus incidents to him and he keeps a record of the accidents.

He further said the SGB has not had a meeting since the beginning of the year.

Most of the pupils from eMbalenhle get registered at Roodebank Combined School, because the other schools are full.

Some parents said the reason they send their children to Roodebank, is because they are not working and they do not have money to buy bus tickets for their children to attend eMbalenhle schools.

Another huge concern for the pupils is that the Grade 8 and 9 pupils have not yet received textbooks, while other grades have to share textbooks because there are not enough for all the pupils.

Mr Lukhele said he applied for textbooks on time.

“Our school does not have enough chairs and we use bricks to sit on,” said a pupil.

The toilets do not have doors and the windows are broken.

The Department of Education did not comment at time of going to the press.
