Municipality prioritises maintenance
Lekwa Municipality focuses on sewage issues.
The sewerage system has been one of the major issues in the Lekwa Municipality with many problems in different parts being reported.
Sewage was spilling directly into the Vaal River from Johann Street in Meyerville.
AfriForum took water samples in different parts of the river.
The results indicated the river was highly polluted with high levels of E.coli in the water.
Shukuma Primary School and Saving Grace Pre-School in Rooikoppen also experienced problems.
Sewage was flowing in front of Saving Grace as well as on the premises of Shukuma.
According to Mr Linda Tshabalala, municipal manager, Mr Henk Pretorius was recently appointed to manage maintenance and repairs for both sewerage and electricity.
“All the issues with the system were because of the lack of maintenance and vandalism,” Mr Tshabalala said.
He also said thieves stole the cables that keep the pump running in Johann Street.
According to him the municipality will replace the cables and the motor as well, if needed.
“A company was appointed provincially to deal with the sewage problems in Rooikoppen,” he also said.
“They have since managed to unblock pipes and also repaired some of the other pipes.”
