EVANDER – Osizweni Science Centre, Sasol’s flagship for education and development, hosted the MinQuiz Highveld Mpumalanga Competition on 14 May.
This annual national science competition for Grade 12 pupils seeks to stimulate interest in careers involving science, technology, engineering, mathematics and innovation (Stemi).
It also aims at promoting an awareness of the importance of minerals and metallurgy to South Africa.
The Osizweni Education and Development Centre has been hosting this prestigious event since 2010.
Ms Angela Stratford, Marketing and PR Practitioner at Osizweni, said: “Osizweni is proud to support Mintek, the main sponsor of this competition.
“An event of this nature creates exposure to these bright young pupils to the opportunities that Mintek offers.
“It creates a platform for the top pupils of the province and later the country to come together under the theme of maths and science.
“We believe education is the foundation for a bright future and through such competitions, we hope to inspire a new generation that will contribute positively to the world of science.”
This year’s event brought together 16 of the surrounding secondary schools.
Pupils competed as individuals through a written test and then later as teams based on the aggregate of the three pupils from each school.
The top five schools in the two categories gold and platinum, progressed to the oral quiz.
AD Nkosi Secondary School came out victorious in the gold category, while Thomas Nhlabathi Secondary School won the platinum category.
Lyn-Marie Smit and Eswee Bothma from Hoërskool Ermelo and Siyabonga Mthombeni and Phumla Ndimande from Thistle Grove Combined School will represent Osizweni at the Minquiz National Competition to be held on 14 and 15 July in Randburg, Gauteng.
The winners of this provincial competition will progress to the national competition.
The prizes are categorised according to the written tests and oral Olympiads.
Schools and pupils compete to receive monetary incentives and trophies.
